Lesson Plan 4: Ducks Overboard
Objective: After reading "Ducks Overboard" students will do a research project on garbage issues and propose solutions
Standards: ELA 9.26: "Conduct short, as well as more sustained, research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation"
Procedure:
1.) Have students share any prior knowledge they have about garbage related issues in the world.
2.) Read "Ducks Overboard"
3.) Share as a group what our takeaways were and why the subject matter is important.
4.) Have students research a current issue that deals with garbage ("garbage island" for example)
5.) Students will create a presentation on Prezi to show the class what they have learned. Students must use credible sources and explain how they know they are credible.
6.) Students will include information such as the amount of garbage, the money it would take to fix, and other solutions (math related thinking)
7.) Students will present to their classmates
Assessment: Students will be assessed by the quality of their presentation, relating it to themes of the book, and having the required information
Exceeds expectations:
Student identifies a problem, does thorough research with credible sources, has all of the necessary information, offers a solution that they can explain, and presents to the class.
Meets expectations:
Student identifies an issue, does an average amount of research with a few good sources, has the minimum amount of information for each category, has some kind of solution, and presents to the class.
Below expectations:
Student does not identify a problem, does no research, misses information, offers no solution, or does not present.
