Lesson Plan 5: Peter Lee's Notes From the Field
Objective: After reading "Peter Lee's Notes From the Field " students will identify a problem they want to solve in their life. They will investigate it through real life observation and research. After they compile the information, they will create a padlet to present information and their solution to the problem.
Standards: ELA 9.27 "Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation (e.g., MLA or APA)."
Procedure:
1.) Ask students to give examples of things they are passionate about (like Peter being passionate about dinosaurs and paleontology.)
2.) Explain that everyone has different interests and that they can lead to different places, and then read the book.
3.) After reading, have a group discussion about what happened in the book, what they thought was interesting, and any other important details.
4.) Have students think back to their original thing they said they were passionate about and identify an issue with it the want to solve.
5.) Have students research online, investigate in person if possible, and attempt to find a solution to the problem.
6.) Students will organize their information on Padlet (easy tool to have information from many different sources in one area)
7.) Students will give an informal presentation from the Padlet to show the class their findings.
Assessment: Students will be assessed by the quality of their identification of a problem, research done, found solution, and presentation.
Exceeds expectations:
Student identifies a problem, does thorough online and in-person research, develops a solution, and presents their findings.
Meets expectations:
Student identifies a problem, does enough research to find a solution, finds an ok solution, and presents their findings.
Below expectations:
Student fails to identify a problem, do research, develop a solution, or present their findings.
